Designs on dreaming

Amidst sensational entertainment, top wines and Nosh catering, Thread attended the launch by Design Mobel of four amazing new bedroom designs by New Zealand designers at the Okooko designer concept store in Wellington.

Four new bed frames were unveiled called ‘Caress’, ‘Aver’, ‘Nest’ and ‘Allude’. Designers include award winning New Zealand designer Helen Jones from Osot Design who has worked in Italy for many years, Dan Gillingham who has used rimu in his Art Nouveau movement inspired design and Anastasia Tubert. Tubert (pictured left) has designed ‘Nest’. This frame, harvested from sustainable forests, is made from Rewa Rewa wood. Tubert says her design “is a sanctuary that lives within your bedroom, a room within a room. Designed to suit whatever you are in the mood for, any time of the day”. And this certainly is one ultra swish sleep system as it features a seamless integration of task lights that twinkle down on you, a cushioned headboard, integrated bedside tables, Bose sound system and an amazing colouring changing mood light. And this was only one of the four designs unveiled.

As well as the four new bed frames, two bedroom furniture collections ‘Dash’ and ‘Allude’ were introduced. Design Mobel has a sustainable ethos. Products are available throughout New Zealand and Australia and exported around the world. For every bed or bedroom suite sold, Design Mobel sees that a native tree is planted somewhere in New Zealand.

We were lucky enough to be taken through the “Your Bodyfit Sleep System” by Okooko’s lovely manager Jen. The “Bodyfit Sleep System” is a prescription tool to help individuals understand and select the right system for a fabulous sleep. A quick step by step process prints out the right prescription pillow and bed based on an individual’s height, weight, age and back and shoulder issues.

Guests were mesmerised by the magic moves of vixen entertainer Majestic Diamond and her dance partner who undertook a themed performance where they started from a hanging sheet and ended curled up in bed.

This experience has changed my view on beds and linen. For the future I will definitely look to invest in products from Okooko. If you visit, which we think you should, prepare to be relaxed but not put to sleep! To visit the contemporary store online go to www.okooko.co.nz or in person go to 282 Wakefield Street Wellington.
