The Strength of Water
I was apprehensive at first about reviewing a New Zealand film because, to be honest, I haven't been impressed in the past. But as the opening scene of The Strength of Water unfolded I knew my worries had all been in vain. This film is truly beautiful.
It tells the story of ten-year-old twins, Kimi and Melody Kaneha, who are struck by an unexpected tragedy in the quiet Northern coast community they call home. We journey with Kimi and his family through grief, anger, and loneliness and come out the other side feeling whole again.

Set against stunning but rugged New Zealand countryside, The Strength of Water is nothing short of real. I found this film to be truly authentic and bold - but in a way that helped me to feel connected to the story and to the characters as if I were walking beside them. This is real New Zealand and real life - not New Zealand dressed in Hollywood clothes. After watching this film it would be hard not to come out feeling more grounded.

The Strength of Water is the debut feature film from award-winning New Zealand director, Armagan Ballantyne and it is not to be missed if you want a taste of something genuine.
The Strength of Water is in cinemas from 27th August 2009.
