Michelle Yvette's Night Creatures

Having been part of the emerging young designers show 2008, this year was Michelle Yvette's first independent showing, taking to the fashion week catwalk with a show of her own.

The most obvious difference with her show ‘Creatures of the Night” (apart from the dancers in gold bikinis starting the show off) was the use of colour. There was an 80’s aesthetic prevalent through the show and shades of electric blue, greens, red and purple and fuchsia. The colours weren’t just used as accents as with other collections either!

Michelle Yvette used lots of defined shoulder details, rushing, sequins, waist detailing and tulle – and cocktail wear! I was chatting with some American buyers after the show and they loved the show – it appears Americans love colour for their after five wear.

I particularly liked the ‘digi print sequin dress’ – and I am your basic black kind of gal. There were pretty dresses and coats – the cape coat was a nice variation on the cape theme we have seen this week.

The label isn’t what I would call edgy high fashion, but will do nicely for her, from her newly-opened store in Britomart in Auckland, for women wanting to make a splash. Not for shrinking violets- more like ultra-violet!
