Wellington artist Ange Lee

Thread attended an opening exhibition of talented Wellington artist Ange Lee at Pixel Ink in Wellington. The wine and nibbles flowed as guests were entranced by the paintings in the Lee’s most recent collection entitled “Untilted“.

Describing her work, Lee says “these paintings are influenced by my interest in Eastern philosophy, universal symbols and physics”. Further, “I’m interested in the unseen; the subconscious and the subatomic. Despite this preoccupation, my works are not intended to be highly conceptual – contemplate them for awhile and find your own meaning.” And you do just that.

Paintings in the current collection are a series of oils on canvas, in a calming, harmonious and thought-provoking palette of blues.

Ange Lee lives high on a hill near the south coast of Wellington. She has exhibited in Japan and New Zealand, and her paintings are held in private collections in the UK, France, Australia and New Zealand. She also has a busy writing, editing and design company called LeeWest.

Where to for this eco, vegan, organic savvy artist who also dabbles in brooch making, designing interiors from recycled materials, and growing herbs, vegetables and plants that survive the best of the Wellington wind? I would say this artist will be seen a lot more in the future. One of Lee’s works has been recently purchased by a French physicist to sit on their walls in Paris. Bonjour!

Lee’s exhibition runs until November, at Pixel Ink Gallery in Newtown, Wellington. If you miss this but want to contact Ange Lee – do so at www.leewest.co.nz or contact Pixel Ink Art Gallery for more information www.pixelink.co.nz
