Looking up @ Ruby

Looking up @ Ruby

Paint Your Heart Out is a collaboration between Ruby Boutique and three NZ artists: Henrietta Harris, Shayna Quinn & Kelly Thompson. Throughout New Zealand, each artist will be showcased in Ruby stores, with the opportunity for customers to purchase limited edition prints from each artist.

The launch party at Ruby’s Newmarket store began with Monteiths Apple Cider over ice at the door and the sounds of the band Teacups in the corner. I didn’t quite know what to make of the crowd that was neither looking at the clothes nor the art. A quick look around showed that they probably knew their fashion trends already.

With ciders to finish, my plus one and I perused the racks – Ruby’s collection is classic Ruby – wearable, on trend (think lace and floral) and with their signature simple yet edgy designs. I particularly liked their scoop necked zip up backs.

A quick glance up and I discovered the art. Kelly Thompson has created sultry drawings with a pastel palette.

Shayna Quinn; a combination of stark still lifes with the freedom of movement and colour that fashion supplies. Henrietta Harris’ drawings are solemn snapshots of nonchalant moments, with rich colours to lift the artwork of the paper.

Despite not being the focus of the event, it is worth stretching your neck to take a look at the art. I like the idea of a local fashion brand collaborating with local artists. Any encouragement for people to experience more art is always a good thing in my books.
