Fashion blogs review

De gustibus non est disputandum – There is no accounting for taste.

However some people seem to have an eye more than others. Here are a couple of basic go-to fashion blogs to keep you on your toes and actively thinking about better ways to use your wardrobe, says Lucy Telford.

thesartorialist@blogspot.com

The Sartorialist’s specialty is interesting ideas worn day to day. He wanders the streets of the cities he visits, snapping shots of people going about their impeccably-dressed lives.

The most compelling aspect of the Sartorialist’s blog is his indifference to traditional fashionista requirements. He doesn’t only shoot “pretty” people. He shoots elderly men and women with style, (the occasional) homeless man, people of all sizes and even children. There is a residual feeling that he especially likes shooting children as they have a certain freedom to their choice of clothes. One boy he noticed, had a penchant for wearing his sister's skirt.

The Sartorialist’s work has been tipped as inspiration to designers, namely Lucas Ossendrijver (Lanvin menswear), which is why he is the no.1 fashion blog to refer to. He will teach you to be brave.

For a more word-orientated fashion blog, check out Garance. She’s clever, she’s chic and she comes in the options of English or French. She is the wife of the Sartorialist, which makes them the ultimate duo.

Her blog has a far more elegant feel to it; less raw and more refined. She has a very different style of blog as her work feels far more professional and academic.

Tavi-thenewgirlintown@blogspot.com

Don’t be dissuaded by Tavi’s age. Her piquant writing style echoes a very intelligent person, the envy of anyone who reads her. She will make you feel ashamed of where you are in your life, vow to start a blog of your own, then never fulfil said vow due to procrastination reading hers.

She has this vibrant, intellectual feel as well as a firm passion in colours, patterns, and an oddball dress sense that is really quite admirable. Excerpt below:

“…And then people like this girl in FRUiTS, or mad old women, or funny toddlers, who dress for the same reasons and may not even know it's called fashion, inspire me as well. They make me want to write a story using what's in my closet, or in a kitchen cabinet waiting to become some type of headpiece.”

Tavi focuses more on fashioning herself, the effect fashion has/is having on her life, and general fashion movements. Since her blog launched in March 08 she has gained a lot of momentum and has had a considerable amount of attention. The only downside about reading her blog is that you will end up seriously re-evaluating where you are in your life.

“The fate of the world relies on several things”, I said.
“And what’re they?” said my butler.
“Chanel jackets, sunglasses, and mystery” I said.”

This Karl Lagerfield blog is delightfully cynical. He is the epitome of black humour as he languidly drops judgments on pretty much everyone. And yet, even as he lazily deems you, his readers, to be “fatties”, you can’t help but feel compelled to keep reading.

“So you see, I see Christmas as a hideous festival of decadent and depraved boredom. It makes me want to vomit- and I would, if I had eaten something in the past 47 years. Instead, I will draw you a picture of a tramp vomiting. Do you understand my point?”

It’s not a fashion opinionated blog, per se. It’s more of a window into his way of thinking. However, it is still worth reading as his writing is exquisite, just like everything else he creates.
